Production Log Week 1 UNITS 14 & 16

Sound elements definitions - UNIT 16

 Sound elements definitions:

  • Sound format - Sound format is when the sound is saved in a different format this will depend on where the sound has to be saved or uploaded. When i am recording i need to take these sound formats in consideration so that the sound is clear.
  • Storage -  Storage is a way of saving a file in a certain area on a certain device whit whatever capacity it has. I will have to take storage into consideration while i am recording my sounds so that all my recordings are safe and there to use.
  • Compression - Compression is when the sound is reduced so that its above a certain threshold. I will need to make sure for this when filming because if the files are to big i will need to compress the file so that it can still be heard.
  • Size versus quality
  • Lossy -  Lossy is when the file is usually compressed and then the quality of the sound is also reduced.
  • Lossless- Lossless is when the file is usually compressed but all the data still stays. From this data it shows that there is no loss of quality from the original recoding.
  • Bit rates - Bit rates is when a certain amount of data is processed per second.
  • File size - File size is when the file is shown on how big it is on the device. All file sizes are different depending on the amount of recoding its has.

Sound elements production report on experimenting and producing sound - UNIT 16

Foley sounds:

Foley sounds are sounds that being reproduced such as footsteps, squeaky doors, breaking glass even sounds such as stepping on leaves. They focus on the minor sounds like breaking glass because it helps keep the audience engaged and makes the film/movie more realistic. They make sure that the sound is blending in with the background scene.  For example "coin Operated" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L4DQfVIcdg. We see in this short clip their is no dialogue we see the characters actions being shown my sound the little detail of sound foe example when something drops.

Wild Tracks:

Wild tracks are used to get a clean audio recording that can be used during post production separate from any sound recorded in production. Wild tracks are sound that is recorded on set for example dialogue, foley and ambient sound. They record these extra sounds on set separately to make it more clear for the audience and let them have a better understanding of sound in the film and Television.  For example  "The equalizer" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TunbuB_bBb8. In this clip we see that the production team had to record gun shot noises to make this scene more realistic.

Theme Music For The Sequence:

Theme music in the sequence is instantly recognisable this helps the audience attach the sound to the charter or in other cases they can attach it to the brand. For example of where this is shown is in "Black panther" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_yQD_s8f8. The theme music is used for the entering of T'Challa arriving in Wakanda. The audio is recognised by the audience leading the audience to instantly recognise the character that is about to enter.

Voice Over:

The use of voice overs is used to show audio visual products in different ways. Moreover, the main purpose of using a voice over is to show the characters thoughts and opinion's or narrating the storyline. For instance we see this in "Black panther wakanda forever" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z3QKkl1WyM. We see a voice over has been used in this trailer to show us the thoughts and emotions of the characters and show us what's happening with in the trailer. Furthermore the voice over fits the purpose.

Scripted Speech:

The use of scripted speech allows the actor to empathise on their lines and deliver it in the meaning they want it to be shown. For instance we see this in the series "Bmf" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_R5PzAToVg.  We can see that the actors have learned their lines and it's been scripted so they can make it as real as possible.

Understand how sound elements are used UNIT 16

Educate:

The sound element educate is used to put a point across to the audience and educate them. The produces educate the audience through information they provide for them. For instance the sound element educate is used in the radio drama "The war after the war" https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m00159st. The reason I picked this radio drama is because it educates the audience about the after efects of the war.

Entertain:

The sound element entertain has many differences that it servers for the audiences. For example one of the purposes of using the sound element entertain is to actually entertain the audience. The producers use the sound element entertain to create a laughing atmosphere for the audience. For instance the sound element entertain is used in this shot clip from the movie "Friday" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGt2dVZ8rt8.  The reason I chose this example is because it gives excitement to the audience that is watching as when he shows his bruised face they all shocked which attracts audience which engages the audience into the movie even more. The dialogue "damn" makes the audience laugh as it stands out.

Inform:

The sound element inform is used to tell the audience what is going on in the programme depending on the different topics that are talked about. The use of sound element is to have awareness on what is going on in the show/programme. An example that I have chosen of where the sound element inform is used on Tv is "BBC  news" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6UV9hVlvHA. The reason I have picked this example is because it informs the audience about what's going on in the world. The presenter is providing information to the target audience that there is war going on in other parts of the world and informing them about what's going on. We can see that the presenter is using the sound element inform.

Sell products:

The sound element sell products is used for the audience. An example that i have chosen of where the sound element sell products is used on Tv is "Miss Dior perfume advert" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOsrjSRfBDY. This advert was created to sell the Dior perfume to the market of the outside world. The video was used to show and attract audience on how nice the perfume smells and get them to buy the perfume. This sound element is targeted towards adults and young adults that buy luxury item's are most likely to purchase this item.

Wild Tracks:

The sound element wild track is an audio recording that is meant to synchronise with the text that is being used. For instance the sound element wild track is found in video games for example "Roblox" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CHsSNqjvOU. In this clip we hear the sound effects of cars and other background noises. This helps create effects to make it sound more real and fun to play.

Atmospheric sounds:

The sound element atmospheric is used to create different types of moods. For instance we see the animation "Mr bean" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixiw7gYiOXk has a atmospheric sound element. In this animation we see that the use of sounds are short and funny. This helps creates a mood for the target audience and helps them enjoy the the animation more and have an understanding of what's going on without dialogue. The animation allows the audience to have a visual understanding with sound effects standing out and the use of no dialogue.

Sound effects:

Sound is used to help create a mood for the audience. For instance, in the film "Snack Attack" https://www.youtube.com/watchv=38y_1EWIE9I&list=PLcX7TDig6sB5VduGjsgXeyNzZhPbmQDso. In the short film we see the producer just uses sound effects and no dialogue to create tension whiten the audience. Sound effects are used to create understanding whiten the audience without having dialogue.

Programme analysis - UNITS 14 & 16

English Rose – Limelight

1) The radio station I picked was English Rose-Limelight. This is the radio station I will look into. This radio station runs on BBC news every Friday. English Rose only has two series, A  fact about this is that all episodes are approximately 30 mins long unless there is an important announcement which takes about 2 mins. The audience is mainly subjected for pupils that act shadowy, and like acting. This also shows how pupils can also be comfortable within their own environment; hence we discovered a series for young people to enjoy. However this programme can only be watched on the BBC radio app which the target audience can install. However they can also just watch it on the BBC radio website.

2) The host introducing BBC Radio 4 on the channel and the show forms the general structure of the channel. The news reporter then proceeds to, report on the dead corpse and victims (her victims) next to various highways and locations that she has taken her victims to. This then takes us into her daily English roses, phone calls, and hear ability to hear her thoughts and conversations with coworkers and friends. English rose the speaks about her "mind wonders" and strives to keep herself from becoming hungry by simply avoiding humans. She speaks to the audience indirectly with the thoughts and knowledge she has on other people as well as her own. She also expresses her desires regarding her nagging and thoughts she has to her self that she wouldn't tell anyone these thoughts are things done without thinking about it.

3) This series is made to educate and entertain the audience only. The first educational information we see when English rose address how she is tried and sick of men and how the male gaze theory works. She briefly discusses her ideas with the target audience at the 6:50 mark in the first clip. ( "he examines me in the mirror with a concentrated gaze I've seen many times, it says I see your athletic form as an insult and I will gobble you up, given half the chance" ). She covers most aspects of when it comes to men's behaviour towards women  how they speak to them. This is only the beginning.  It teaches the boys how they will learn how certain things they say or how they treat women  can effect them, changing how they act and what not to do now or even in the future, this is educational not only for women but also for younger generations and men. Furthermore, the dark mysterious vampire are shown. At 13:30 "wow no okay, maybe the straightforward northern approach isn't going to work with these people" .  I choose this radio station because i enjoy watching mystery genre stuff i also like vampire stuff a lot because it connotes into something that's not real.

Task Allocation 10 - UNITS 14 & 16
